As summer ends, colder weather arrives too, along with that time of year when we swap lightweight clothes for warmer fabrics. With this in mind, and considering the care needed for clothes that will be stored until next year as well as those that will be worn again, we have some tips that will certainly be useful during this transition period.
Swap summer clothes for warm clothing
Take the clothes that have been stored out of the boxes and closets where they have spent the last few months. Take this opportunity to sort them by type of garment and decide what you will wear again and what you no longer want. Make a list of items you may need to buy and find a good new home for anything you will no longer use.
Do the same with your summer clothes: decide what you want to keep and what is not worth storing again.
Take care of your clothes (the ones you are storing and wearing again)
This is an essential step, both for the clothes that will be stored and for those you will wear again. Air out items that have been kept in closed closets for several months (such as warm winter coats, for example), and wash any that have developed an unpleasant smell.
Repeat the process for your summer clothes and make sure everything is stored in perfect condition. Take some time to wash and iron everything.
Organize, organize, organize
Although it may be a somewhat time-consuming and not very enjoyable process, try to organize all the items you will store during the winter. A good trick is to organize everything by type of garment. This will make it much easier to find certain clothes when you want to wear them again.
Clean drawers and closets
Take advantage of the time when your clothes are being washed, dried, or aired out to clean your drawers and closets. Vacuum up any dust that may have accumulated and finish by wiping everything with a damp cloth, water, and a mild detergent with a fragrance you like. Let everything dry thoroughly before putting any clothes away again.
Some additional care tips
Avoid unpleasant smells or any kind of less welcome “surprise” when it is time to use the fresh clothes you are storing again. Invest in scented sachets designed for fabrics. You can choose ones with anti-mold or moth-repellent properties, depending on the area and the closets where everything will be stored.
